he IATA AGM: Shadow Boxing

Truth is the first victim of war, particularly a trade war. You do not need ceasefire violations, troop movements and occupying forces. But it is true that the truth can be hard to pin down; or to be kind, can vary, according to which side you ask. My aviation-favourable national policy is your subsidised airport. My subsidised air traffic management service is your competitive advantage. And so it goes. Sometimes, the best one can do is approximate.

The CANSO AGM: Pulling No Punches

Delegates at industry summits, conferences and AGMs often find themselves in a news-free, reality-free zone, completely subsumed by the programme and the social whirl, bused from one event to another without contact with the host city, or indeed country. ATNS, the ANSP of South Africa and host of this year’s CANSO AGM, held in Durban in mid-June, made sure that did not happen.

The ACI AGM: In the Box Seat

In almost every respect, the ACI AGM, at the end of June, in Prague, was a study in chiaroscuro against the background of the IATA AGM. The trade war was not only mentioned, it was discussed openly. The ACI published a policy statement, firmly in support of open markets and increased competition. The conference also looked to shift the agenda forward – attempting to build allies in the tourism community. Best of all, the Gala Dinner entertainment was provided by the famous Prague Black Light Theatre.

Europe’s Airlines: All Together Now

Europe’s current round of airline and trade association musical chairs continues. However, in a twist on the usual rules, this time, the airlines added a chair. The big five European airlines, Ryanair, EasyJet, Lufthansa, IAG and Air France/KLM came together to announce the creation of a new association, modelled on the American trade association, Airlines for America.

The Private Jet Milk Run

Summer is upon us and for the vast majority of sun-seeking tourists that means getting there by automobile, train and scheduled airline. Likewise, almost all the visitors to the summer´s social, sporting, arts and music events will get there and back courtesy of our favourite low cost carriers. But a tiny minority will skip the check-in queue altogether. They will be flying privately and the numbers show that for these few, this is the time of year to book your jet early. For others, this promises to be a great few weeks for exotic plane spotting.
