You be the judge – make your own ETS scheme for aviation

Imagine, if you will, that you have been asked to design an emission trading scheme for European air transport. Take as a given that the political will is such that there is no question that the scheme be in place, that airlines be included along with other industry sectors. No, you are not allowed to bottle it by muttering something about needing a global system.

All hail to the Party

June is annual general meeting month for air transport – and IATA set the ball rolling in Kuala Lumpur with a scream of pain that must have been heard in Singapore. The situation is so dire that even Giovanni Bisignani’s speech writers seem to be running out of purple prose.

The CANSO AGM – Once more unto the beach, dear friends

Only a week or so later, the great and the good of the ANSPs gathered in San Diego for CANSO’s AGM. Social events included a beach party at an artificial beach area, complete with a huge pool with a wave machine. The wave machine was pumping, the analogy machine nearly went into melt down: riding the waves of change; wipe-out; you can imagine the rest.

European Airports: in Manchester, united

Europe’s airports also got in on the act, with their annual meeting in Manchester at the same time as the ANSPs were riding the waves of change. What with having a reception at the Man U football team ground, the dominant analogy was ‘playing as a team’.

The Paris Air Show – Quiet inside the halls, anyway

In the meantime, the centenary Paris Air Show was also underway at le Bourget. Not one stand failed to mention the environment, or use the word green. Did we tell you just how very committed we all are to doing something about it too, by the way?

Meanwhile in Brussels, EU-US Open Skies, phase II

And to finish up what was a very busy month, the US negotiators came to Brussels for a further round of talks about phase II of the EU-US Open Skies agreement.
