Hard Charging Airports Deny Charges of Over-Charging

At the start of the year it is customary to set out what one sees as the issues for the next twelve months, safe in the knowledge that no-one else has any better idea than you about the accuracy of the predictions and that, by tacit agreement, no-one will hold you to those predictions anyway. So, in that spirit, we predict that somewhere near the top of the European aviation agenda this year will be airport charges.

More Asymmetric Analysis on the Pilots’ Lot

The policeman’s lot, Gilbert and Sullivan tell us, is not a happy one. Perhaps the most unhappy lot for the rest of us it that, sadly, the term ‘asymmetric employment’ had not seared its way across the lexicon in time for the song to have an altogether different title. The policeman’s lot is an asymmetric one has a certain ring to it. Sad it is too that a phrase like ‘social dumping’ was not able to get the WS Gilbert gloss, or at least a rhyming couplet or two.

Business Aviation: Can Unicorns Fly?

Business aviation joined the unicorn club last year. JetSmarter, one of its newer members, notched up a valuation of $1.5 billion in its December 2016 financing round of $105 million. JetSmarter only turned up in 2012, a Jonny-come-lately in a slew of start-ups aiming to make business jets available for hire online. Amongst JetSmarter’s initial investors are Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, and the Saudi Royal Family, which always helps. With the new money in, Florida-based JetSmarter is expanding globally (of course), but also aspires to change the way business aviation works. So is this a sign of newfound health in the business aviation sector, or just an almighty flash in the pan?

The Super Id and Super Highways of the Sky

The production of a play leaves to the director and the actors the task of divining what meanings there are in the text and, crucially, what meanings there might be lurking in the sub-text. If the playwright is still alive he or she can be asked, but often, they are as surprised as anyone at the meanings teased out by a new production. Well, anyone but Dr Freud, of course. To the Freudian, it is no surprise that there are meanings and devices not even understood by the writer, tucked away awaiting later revelation.

In-Flight Voice Calls? Who Knows! #WelcomeToTheTrumpAdministration

Not content to ban travellers from countries in which he is not doing business from entering the USA; on 20 January, President Trump instructed Reince Priebus, his Chief of Staff to send a memorandum to the heads of US executive branch departments and agencies freezing all regulation making. The order prohibits the publication of regulations in the Federal Register until a department or agency head appointed or designated by President Trump reviews and approves them.
