One of the goals of the new, unfortunately named A4E is to put an end to ANSP industrial action. Indeed, the only sensible goal is to put an end to controller industrial actions. The other two goals – no new airport charges and no new taxes – are silly beyond words. IATA has admitted that the impact of charges, whether airport- or ANSP- generated has a negligible impact on profitability. There goes the airport charges line. Telling states not to tax travelers is a non-starter too. Even Dubai is doing it.

The great and good of air traffic management gathered in Madrid last month for the World ATM Congress. All anyone could talk about was remote towers. Some were even seen wearing badges with ‘I heart remote towers’ emboldened across them.

Airline Trade Associations Go Game of Thrones
The world waits for the new series of Game of Thrones to be broadcast at the end of this month. Actors’ every utterance are being scrutinised for potential plot line leaks. Speculation about the fidelity of the TV series to George R R Martin’s fantasy novels abounds. If only they knew to watch the aviation industry. A nearly identical saga is unfolding across the airline trade associations of Europe. Fortunately, the aviation version has slightly less nudity but threatens to be just as gruesome.

There is new management at ICAO and watch out, they are as mad as hell and they are not going to take it anymore. As Malvolio was reminded, some are born great, some achieve greatness and some, of course, have greatness thrust upon them. ICAO has decided to achieve the greatness it deserves. Let us hope it ends better for ICAO than it did for Malvolio. No more Mr Nice Guy. It has a story to tell and it intends telling it. The story is this: Aviation is a Force For Good.

Business Aviation: One Engine Will Do
Last year the European Business Aviation Association commissioned a report to evaluate the economic impact of business aviation in Europe. The resulting study, by Booz Allen Hamilton, is a commendably ambitious analysis, especially where demonstrating the time saved by using business aviation. Centrally, the research shows that the average business aviation sector saves the passenger 127 minutes compared to the best alternative transportation, mostly but not always, a scheduled airline.
