The New European Aviation Strategy: Sound, But Expect Fury

While the European Commission’s new, eagerly awaited, proposed aviation strategy package is yet to be tabled at the European Council – the Council meets on 2 December – its content is already well known. Drafts of the Communication have been circulating for some weeks. The various industry players have been busy getting their press releases in early, bemoaning that the package does not go far enough/goes too far and exhorting further/less work, depending on which side of their particular point of concern the document falls down.

Low Cost ANSP Seeks Like-Minded Airline for Meaningful Relationship

You may have noticed that from time-to-time we are critical of the outdated regulatory structure with which the aviation industry is cursed. Unsurprisingly, the legacy carriers – legacy, as in a gift in a will – rather like it, most noticeably for its focus on equality of outcome not of opportunity. However, despite their best efforts to preserve this gold mine, even they have to admit that the game has changed in the last few years.

The Airframe is Part of the Future for ATM

By Neil Planzer, VP Airspace Solutions and Air Traffic Management, Boeing Digital Aviation
Boeing has been making public its forecasts of aviation markets, traffic changes and growth for several years now. Generally, they get it pretty right, but if they err, it is on the conservative side. So the recent Boeing Commercial Market Outlook is something we should give due regard as we think about the ATM part of the aviation industry and what will happen into the future.

The Commission’s review of Europe’s aviation policy has already brought benefits to the European economy. The mere announcement of the review saw a spike in jobs and growth in the submission writing industry. Barrows are being pushed everywhere.

NBAA 2015: Still Waters Are Running Deep

At this year´s just-gone NBAA show, held in Las Vegas, there were over 27,000 attendees. That makes it one of the best-attended on record, still slightly shy of the crowds assembled in the boom-time of 2006 to 2008, but maintaining the recovery in numbers over the last few years. That bears some correlation to the fortunes of the business aviation industry, with its benchmark index of new orders and deliveries edging up recently. The new normal is nowhere near 2007, but underlying the aggregate picture, there were also a number of exciting developments coming out at the show.

An Airline Provided Guided Tour of the New Travel Package Directive

Once upon a time, flying was glamorous, done by men in hats and women in twin sets. The airlines were behemoths, as well as vendors, of class. Then they started commoditising their product. Now, it is sold on the internet, in a fiercely competitive market. But no-one seems to have told the customer complaints department of the change. For them it is always 1952 and an air of hauteur is de rigeur. Any complaints are to be ignored, or better still treated with contempt. Regulators, as likely as anyone else to be treated like this, have fought back and passenger rights rules are in vogue.
