European Skies, Singularly: What ATM Can Teach David Cameron

You do not have to live in Europe to know that it is in a state of some confusion at the moment. UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s recent speech proposing an in/out referendum on Britain’s European Union membership only added to the hubbub. Touching on a zeitgeist more common in European aviation than he might want to admit, he said he wants to repatriate powers to Britain, making the EU a mere free trade zone.

Air Club: Hot Air or oneworld for Business Aviation?

The year 2012 was depressing for the business aviation industry. In the USA, a good stock market performance and recovering economy failed to catalyse a strong recovery. In Europe, activity fell to levels last seen in 2005. Even in emerging Asian markets the shine came off the impressive surge of recent years. In contrast, the commercial airline industry is finding ways to cope with difficult economic conditions. Business aviation could do worse than emulate some of those survival strategies.

ATM Competition – En-route to a Model

As we noted in the Aviation Intelligence Reporter last month, the move from cost-plus to performance-driven ATM in Europe was one of the better things to happen in aviation in 2012. This was despite CANSO, the ACI and IATA all signing a declaration demanding the contrary in Panama. The industry seems to be keeping that particularly regressive joint declaration under its hat for the moment, fortunately.

The €100 Million Mandate: It Takes Two to Datalink

It is time to synchronise your calendars. The requirement that all European carriers be equipped with that wonderfully unpronounceable acronym, CPDLC, or Controller Pilot Data Link Communications, is nearly here. Airlines are required to have it ready by 7 February. But, after spending huge amounts of money complying with this mandatory deadline, they will have no one to link data with.

Inertia versus Airport Expansion

Isaac Newton’s First Law defines inertia not just as a resting body that stays at rest. No, it is also a moving body that keeps moving. He might have had bureaucracy in mind. When there’s nothing to do, an existing institution will keep moving anyway. Take the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the time-bomb it created with the little understood and vastly under-estimated Aarhus Convention of 2001.

It is Morning in IATA

After more than a year in the DG hot seat, Tony Tyler is starting to make his presence felt at IATA. The darkness is lifting. A consultant report, ‘Project Sunrise’ is gently lifting off. The first changes are starting to make themselves obvious. The head of HR has left, to the palpable joy of IATA employees past and present. Expect other changes as well as the top line is reshaped.
