Most school students seem to spend inordinate amounts of time studying the causes of
World War One, even doing desk-top simulations of the political situation by playing
board games such as Diplomacy. What this teaches is that alliances need to be formed,
but that they are tricky things and can have some difficult outcomes.

theorise about why humans will disappoint – selecting the least healthy, most destructive
option, following the devices and desires of their hearts and not their head. It is not
usually possible to deploy the normal tools of rigorous science: control groups and null
hypotheses, that sort of thing.

would famously say that if you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it. Which is why
