ATC (Air Traffic command and Control) or ATM (Air Traffic free Markets)

There is insufficient discussion of philosophy in air traffic management. That is a pity. Whilst it is true that an industry that praises its philosophers but not its plumbers gets both bad plumbing and bad philosophy, it is also true that an industry that praises its plumbers but not its philosophers gets theories that do not hold water.

High Level Meeting on Environment, but thankfully, not a Summit

Your heart had to bleed for the communications team at IATA after reading their press release issued at the conclusion of the ICAO convened ‘High Level Meeting’ on the environment. Smiling grimly through the tears does not start to describe the attempt to put a brave face on the outcome. If you could sell brave-face-in-a-jar IATA would corner the market.

Europe: an alliance of states that does not like the state of alliances

The worst kept secret in Brussels was that British Airways was to receive a list of concerns regarding its application for antitrust immunity with American Airlines. Dipping into IATA’s supply of brave-face-in-a-jar, BA said that this was part of the process and that it would respond in due course.

The not-so-brave new world of Open Skies

Remember when the EU and the US signed the first phase of the EU-US Open Skies bilateral agreement? There were speeches made about how this was the first step in a strictly two step process that would force further liberalisation. The British carriers went so far as to note that if they did not get the opening up they wanted in the US, they would have no hesitation in, yes, Pulling Out.

Who is regulating the regulators? Not Errol Flynn

All the European airlines invested considerable capital, political and cash, in the Single European Sky initiative. Now, they want to see the benefits of that investment made real.

State Aid back on the agenda – if you know where to look

Few issues have divided the airline community like State Aid. When it is propping up legacy carriers such as Olympic and Alitalia it is bad, because it distorts competition. When it is used to open an airport to low cost carriers to promote competition, for example, it is bad, or good, depending on which side of the LCC line you stand.
